Carnelian is a member of the Chalcedony family and is found in Brazil, India and Uruguay. Some Carnelian on the market is dyed and heat-treated agate; distinguish from natural Carnelian which has a cloudy
distribution of color, not bands when held up to light. The color of Carnelian ranges from milky white to brownish reds and oranges.
Carnelian is said to raise self esteem, ease sleeping and calm the nerves. It is an ancient stone, with references in Egyptian mythology – the goddess Isis used a Carnelian amulet to protect the dead.
Carnelian blends well with warm tones of Socho Jade or Amber, contrasting black stone or onyx, or even the complementary greens in Adventurine or blue-green Turquoise. Accent Carnelian with gold or vermeil for an elegant look, or silver for a more casual design.
An affordable semi-precious stone, Carnelian is a good choice if you are making the jump to higher value jewelry. Use good quality findings and accompanying beads to enhance the worth of your piece.
