Spotting A Genuine Diamond

Determining if a diamond is real can be a tricky proposition. There are many professionals who know how to determine if diamond is genuine. They will perform tests on the stone to see if it is fact a real diamond. If you do not have access to a diamond professional, there are a few remedial test that can be performed that will help you figure out if the stone is a diamond or just a good fake.

You can attempt to look through a diamond at some print, like a newspaper. Because a diamond refracts light, the print will be undefined and it should be hard to read. If the print is clear, the stone you are looking at is most likely not a diamond.

Another way to tell if a stone is a diamond is to breathe on it. Since a diamond is a great conductor of heat, if you breathe on one, it will not look moist at all. Many other diamond-like stones will have a bit of moisture on them right after being breathed on.

Another safe bet in telling a real diamond from another stone is price. If a stone that appears to be a diamond is inexpensive, it is most likely not a diamond at all, but possibly a cubic zirconium, quartz, or another clear stone that is set into jewelry.
