Another night of experimenting with rose petal beads…
This time, I had some lovely yellow roses (my administrative assistant, Sandy offered up her wilting bouquet from Admin Day last week). I really wanted to experiment with keeping that gorgeous yellow shade, but forgot to pick up any Fruit Fresh, and don’t even kid yourself that I’d have any in my cupboards!
But I did have some fresh lemons, so thinking about how one keeps an apple or peach from browning in a fruit salad (squeeze lemon juice on it), I decided to give it a try with the rose petals.
I didn’t like the way the cooked beads turned out at all, so I’m sticking with the blender method. After putting in the petals, about 1/3 of a lemon’s freshly squeeze juice, and some additional water (about 1/2 c), I blended on medium for a couple of minutes. Was not happy with the “dog-food” texture of the last batch, so I wanted this batch of goop to be as smooth as possible.
The petal goo came out of the blender smelling like, well a rose! And slightly of lemons as well. The color is a nice bright yellow, and after drying out slightly on a dish towel, it made some nicely shaped beads. Because my last batch was pretty un-uniform in size, I decided to measure out the amount of petal-dough for each bead, using a 1/4 teaspoon measure.
This batch really shaped much better than the last, I think because the glop was so smooth, and I was able to get nice rounds, some cylinders, and what might turn out to be a 3-piece flower focal bead. We’ll see.
More to come as they dry. I’m really hoping the color doesn’t turn that awful Iams brown again.
