My Own Scary Craft Show Story

October 3, 2006

As promised, I wanted to share my own scariest craft show story….well, it’s scary to me because I have a slight case of Ornithophobia….

We were at a county fairgrounds in the 4H building. It was actually set up kind of cool – everyone had almost like a little room of their own with shelves, a counter, and storage space.

The people next to me were with the Omaha Parrot Rescue group. I don’t really like birds all that much. Like, they scare me. I feed them outside my house, but I’ve been attacked by seagulls and chickens, and I really do not like birds. While it doesn’t quite border on a phobia, I’d just rather not be too close to them.

So these birds in the booth next to me were running loose or were perched on the shoulders of the women who were running the booth. By the end of the show, the women had birdpoo all the way down the backs of their t-shirts and it totally grossed me out.

To top it off, several times, I went back into the back of my booth to get something out of storage, only to come face to face with the cockatiel that kept escaping from his cage and decided he liked me (or my beads….). I’d screech, the ladies next to me would scold the bird, and put him away. Rinse, repeat.

It really wasn’t a successful show, but I don’t think I would have gone back anyway, given my neighbors. Maybe a nice Gator Resue group, but no more parrots. ;-)
