October: Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Opals, Halloween Jewelry, Win Free Beads
October 1, 2006
What a huge month October is!
First of all, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Since I participated in the Avon 3-Day Breast Cancer Walk in 2002, I have been active in helping to raise funds through my jewelry making and other activities. More ideas as we journey through October, but to start, you can try the sleek Kathy BCA bracelet, Have a Heart BCA bracelet, or the BCA Dangle necklace. Also read my article, Beading to Beat Breast Cancer for more thoughts on charity work through crafting.
Secondly, October’s birthstone is the Opal, with alternate of Pink Zircon. If you don’t have access to real opals, use opal glass as an inexpensive alternative. Pink Swarovski crystals are a great representative of zircon in birthstone jewelry!
TRIVIA: Did you know that October 5 is the most common birthdate in the United States? My daughter’s birthday is October 5, so I helped with that statistic! Our immediate family has two birthdays in October, with at least two others in my close extended family that I can think of…October is a popular month all around!
Halloween is just around the corner…I had some Halloween jewelry out at my show yesterday and heard “Oh, you can only wear it one day”…NO NO NO!! I wear my Halloween jewelry and sweaters every Friday in October. We wear Christmas gear for weeks ahead of time, why not Halloween?! I’ll be posting more ideas for cute and easy Halloween jewelry throughout the month, but you can get started with the Spider in a Web Earrings if you have some lightweight wire in your stash.
Lastly, I’m going to keep reminding you to send in your scarey jewelry making, craft show and beading stories for our October contest. Win free beads!!! I was reminded of my own scary story the other day and will post it on the blog this week.
Happy October!
